(The Daily Supplement) The day we have all been waiting for may have arrived. Drinking beer might actually be good for you. A recent study suggests that an ingredient in beer, called xanthohumol, may help prevent prostate cancer. The compound xanthohumol is a phytochemical found in hops (a natural flavoring agent in beer) and is known to block testosterone, which is linked to a role in the development of prostate cancer.

The results of the study were presented at an American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) conference in Houston on December 9. ”We hope that one day we can demonstrate that xanthohumol prevents prostate cancer development, first in animal models and then in humans, but we are just at the beginning,” Dr. Gerhauser said.

The study is new and more research will be required to determine the true effectiveness and viability of beer as a potential solution. I plan to be an early adopter just in case it works. And even if it doesn’t, I’m already enjoying well documented benefits of alcohol - improved eyesight and decision making.
